Okay. I mentioned an egg mixed with a gallon of water a couple years ago.. Since then I have been using it, and It really works! (and smells bad, but only initially) Mix in a tablespoon of soap for longer lasting protection. If it rains alot or you get the plants wet on a regular basis you need to reapply. It doesn't have to cover everything, just be nearby so they can smell it. I have a small herd literally living in my yard and this keeps them away from my flowers and ornamentals. I do have a fenced area for my main veggie garden. Also they don't like walking thru pumpkins and squash so it you plant these and they get big enuf, then you can plan other stuff amongst them.

I've heard that dog hair spread around the perimeter of the garden will keep the deer away. Not sure how effective it truly is, since I haven't tried it yet myself, but it might be worth a shot.

There is a product called Shake Away that we use in our landscaping business. It's just dehydrated predator urine. You have to replenish it about every month, but it seems to work, no one's been calling to get their plants replaced!

We really like the Scarecrow. It's an impact sprinkler with a motion detector on it. Works like a charm on all animals. Just make sure if you're working in the yard to turn it off. someone recommended to me about using Irish spring soap, i think the fresh river scent or something like that. And i didn't notice any deer visitings in the garden the soap did have various racoon clawmarks on it.

Hi there - I live in a snooty neighborhood that will not allow fences, or killing deer for that matter. I use two electric wires, deer-knee and deer-chest level around the perimeter. Then I got some 80lb test sea fishing line and ran it all around and throughout the garden. So far Nothing has been consumed, but I do have an opposum in my compost :) Good luck!

Ditto on the fence. Otherwise look around your neighborhood and see what's growing. Thats what they don't eat. One old timer in my hood mixes and egg with a gallon o water and sprays it on. It seems to work, but what a hassle! Ask at you local nursery or ag extension. Sunset western garden book has some tips, but it really varies according to your area and what other choices they have.

I was told once they hate the smell of human hair. I have little cheescloth bundles with my cut hair hanging around my garden. In the last 3 years I have not had any intruders. They frequently pass by within 40-50 feet but don't visit the garden I can't neccessarily attribute that to the hair but so far so good (*knock on wood*) Another tactic frinds of mine use is to send their meat-eating members of their houshold to mark their turf. This is also supposed to help keep coyotee away from their animals.

We use the fencing, as already mentioned here, "Zoning, we don't need not stinking zoning". One neighbor swears by going to the zoo and getting tiger poo. Now why a deer in oregon would know to avoid a tiger, I don't know. We also have the benefit of a large Lab who barks at anything but wouldn't know what to do beyond that, he lays down with our chickens around him.

"like 12 feet tall." 7-8 foot is about the standard for Northern Calif. They can get over it if they really want, but its rare enough to call it ok. Zoning foks go nuts if you go much higher.

Stan's right. Big fence meaning TALL fence - like 12 feet tall. The dogs have to live outside - which isn't all bad. My dog lives outside and sleeps on the porch. If we had a deer problem, he would put a stop to it. Investing in fencing and guard animals could be cheaper in the long run than constantly buying deer repellant, plus you never know if those products are going to work.

There are a thousand products to repel deer on the market. Anyone had really good luck with any in particular? We haven't had a problem, but my friend just up the road has had every plant and tree she's put in stripped bare. I doubt it makes any difference, but the deer around here are mule deer. Thanks!
