Re: Squirrels
Sun, December 7, 2008 - 3:32 PMWe use an airsoft rifle (stings but doesn't really injure them) or we let the dogs loose.

Re: Squirrels
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 7:20 AMMothballs spread through the garden can sometimes help too. -
-
Re: Squirrels
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 7:22 AMThough, come to think of it, I'd check into whether they're appropriate for edible plants/gardens since I've only ever used them in flower gardens (where they have been effective). -

Re: Squirrels
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 10:29 AMyep: get a cat or a dog. then they move on to different shores -
-
Re: Squirrels
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 12:10 AMMy cat plays with them! The other day one was on the roof of my shed squaking at the cat to chase it!

Re: Squirrels
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 1:04 AMI had a German Shepherd who is great around people, especially gentle with small children but by itself around squirrels and anytime around groundhogs and the dog suffered from the Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde syndrome.

Re: Squirrels
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 1:14 PMOur dog helped a little, but when they started destroying thousands of dollars worth of tulip and daffodil bulbs, I broke down and poisoned 22 of them. Almost lost our dog though when he ate part of one of the poisoned squirrels. -

Re: Squirrels
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 1:27 PMThey may be annoying, but I don't think I could kill them...Someone I knew once had them gnawing cables in her house though, they peed on everything in her attic too.!! Over here it is ok to trap them, but illegal to set them free again, so you have to kill them! ....better to not encourage them by leaving food around (like rats) They all go where the bird tables are.......

Re: Squirrels
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 8:39 AMWhat kind of squirrels are they? There are ground squirrels (live in holes in the ground), gray tree squirrels (not usually pestilent in gardens) and Non-native red tree squirrels (I hear they can be pestilent in cities). A good air rifle will kill any of them. Traps are different for tree v.s. ground squirrels. -

Have you tried the ultrasonic sound devices? Something like this squirrel-x.com/ultrasonic.htm might help.
Not sure if they work, but might be worth a try. Squirrels were eating my flower bulbs earlier this year too. Can you put netting or a fence around the plants?

Re: Squirrels
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 1:59 PM(I posted this in the green thumbs tribe in response to -I think- your same question; I figured others here night care for this information)
I have had really good luck deterring pests - neighbor's poopy cats, raccoons, skunks, squirrels - with a motion-detector water sprayer called a Scarecrow. Love it! and it is much friendlier than the BB gun!
www.contech-inc.com/Products/Scarecrow/
ps it is a bit pricey, but well worth it, and their customer service is really great if you break part of it as I did - they sent me new parts for free in a few days after calling them! -

Re: Squirrels
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 2:02 PMoh and yeah like their website says it also deters heron. I know, who has heron problems? but really, a landscaping client of mine had a pond full of thousand-dollar koi that kept getting eaten by a giant blue heron, and this contraption worked to deter it. -

Re: Squirrels
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 2:55 PMWhat? Herons don't like water?!

Re: Squirrels
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 2:48 PMHow about a regular water pistol? ....cat's have really good memories , why not squirrels?! My neighbour has one (on my aproval) as it doesn't harm my cat, but he thinks twice about 'squatting' in her garden now! -

Re: Squirrels
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 4:54 PMThanks everyone for the great suggestions!
The day before I posted the original post, I put a lot of cayenne and mustard powder all over everything. After an initial squirrel attack, the critters seem to have backed off. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Re: Squirrels
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 10:53 AMHa ha, water pistols don't work so well on my cats. Bastards.

Re: Squirrels
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 10:53 AMI second the scarecrow. We used it to keep the dogs out of the flower beds. Worked like a charm. Just make sure you turn it off before walking in front of you. It can really startle you. LOL. -

Re: Squirrels
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 11:06 AMyeah I loved getting sprayed in the head a couple of times to get the adjustments correct! and also if you have guests over and you invite them into the yard for a nice BBQ, it is best to turn the thing off! LOL at the memory of getting repeatedly tagged, then inviting best friend to get hosed too, unintentionally of course! um ha! -

Re: Squirrels
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 5:01 PMI wonder if you but small wire fences circling around the nearest large trees that are close to your garden if that would be a simple fix? Maybe they would not feel secure around the garden if they could not scamper up those trees?

Re: Squirrels
Sun, December 14, 2008 - 7:03 AMthey're rodents, just kill them. They'll make more. Besides if you setup a death zone that every squirrel who enters never leaves the others will eventually figure it out and not go in there.
you could set up some snares and then eat them -

Re: Squirrels
Sun, December 14, 2008 - 9:00 AMyour lack of creativity astounds me....that's simply Barbaric! -
-
Re: Squirrels
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 12:06 AMI really don't see the need to kill them! certainly over here they are not as prollific as rats,. In both cases if you don't provide food , they won't come.... simple! -

you could start an herb garden!
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 11:05 AMi think squirrels are cute and fun to watch. they prefer nuts and if you make a feeder for them, they may leave your garden alone.
you could consider that recreation, watching the squirrels at play. and if times get hard you will have an extra protein source. . .stewed with herbs. -
-
Re: you could start an herb garden!
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 11:17 AMIf times were hard, surely you'd just eat the nuts?! You would save a lot more energy, ammunition and washing! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: you could start an herb garden!
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 12:05 PMif times were hard i wouldn't be able to buy nuts to feed the squirrels. . .or me. . -
-
Re: you could start an herb garden!
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 1:26 PMBut you would have 'squirreled' them away, surely? -
-
Re: you could start an herb garden!
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 3:13 PMhmmm. . .perhaps i should be more "squirrelish!" -
-
