i think squirrels are cute and fun to watch. they prefer nuts and if you make a feeder for them, they may leave your garden alone.

you could consider that recreation, watching the squirrels at play. and if times get hard you will have an extra protein source. . .stewed with herbs.

they're rodents, just kill them. They'll make more. Besides if you setup a death zone that every squirrel who enters never leaves the others will eventually figure it out and not go in there.

you could set up some snares and then eat them

I wonder if you but small wire fences circling around the nearest large trees that are close to your garden if that would be a simple fix? Maybe they would not feel secure around the garden if they could not scamper up those trees?

(I posted this in the green thumbs tribe in response to -I think- your same question; I figured others here night care for this information)

I have had really good luck deterring pests - neighbor's poopy cats, raccoons, skunks, squirrels - with a motion-detector water sprayer called a Scarecrow. Love it! and it is much friendlier than the BB gun!

www.contech-inc.com/Products/Scarecrow/

ps it is a bit pricey, but well worth it, and their customer service is really great if you break part of it as I did - they sent me new parts for free in a few days after calling them!

What kind of squirrels are they? There are ground squirrels (live in holes in the ground), gray tree squirrels (not usually pestilent in gardens) and Non-native red tree squirrels (I hear they can be pestilent in cities). A good air rifle will kill any of them. Traps are different for tree v.s. ground squirrels.

They may be annoying, but I don't think I could kill them...Someone I knew once had them gnawing cables in her house though, they peed on everything in her attic too.!! Over here it is ok to trap them, but illegal to set them free again, so you have to kill them! ....better to not encourage them by leaving food around (like rats) They all go where the bird tables are.......
