I suggest using rock dust instead of traditional fertilizers. It provides a wide array of minerals to the plants.
Some gardening stores may carry it, otherwise, go to a gravel quarry nearby and ask if you can get some pond fines.
For more info check out www.remineralize.org and a tribe on the preocess at tribes.tribe.net/remineralizeearth

Rock dust coupled with some good compost or worm castings will do an excellent job.
It is important that it is very fine and from a mixed source of rocks.

Menstrual blood diluted with room temp. water. Seriously, it is every woman's magic fertilizer.
      :-)
If you use a menstrual cup like a keeper or diva cup it is easy...or soaking cloth pads works well, too. Just use the soak water.

interesting . . . do your plants smell like blood?

not sure how keen my 4 male roommates would be about this (i've barely got them sold on not using artificial pesticides/fertilizer), so i'd probably want to do it surreptitiously.

Yes! Menstrual blood makes for happy house plants. Also, in the spring, summer & fall I feed seaweed/fish emulsion (especially for blooming plants). In the winter (in the Northeast, anyway) a lot of house plants are semi-dormant.

That makes sense, and convenient for me since my father probably has some rock dust laying around (he's a geologist).

Back to the metrual blood topic: some women make "tampon tea" by soaking a used tampon in a cup of water, then squeezing it out and pouring it over the plants. It's the best fertilizer ever and creates a deep bond of mutual healing and nourishment. Why would anyone waste their precious life force energy by sending it to the dump? No, your plant won't smell bloody, they'll perk up right away. =)

A few years ago I started gardening in pots. My biggest problem the first year was the texture of the soil more than what was in it. I bought a potting soil from a local garden center that was way to compact. I think I planted over 50 plants in that soil and the only ones to survive where some tomatoes that were already 6+ inches tall before I bought them. If you have any doubts, add some sphagnum peat and/or vermiculite. The soil should be almost fluffy

As for fertilizer, I just buy an extra bag of compost and make compost tea. I wasn’t too sure about the menstrual blood thing the first time I read this post, but the more I think about it the more I like it. It definitely ties you to the plants you grow. I happen to be male, so I won’t be trying it unless something goes terribly wrong with my body. A word of caution, blood is very high in nitrogen, which promotes green leafy growth but doesn’t do much for roots or fruit. If you grow garden plants that fruit or flower or root plants, you may want to limit the amount you add when you want the plant to fruit. Disclaimer: I have no idea how much blood would be available during your cycle; it may not be in enough to be an issue.

Darren- thanks for your positive reflection on the blood for plants campaign. :-)

I also like to add my leftover herbal infusion to my plants, when the infusion is a little funky and it's just not palatable anymore...nettles, oatstraw, red clover, comfrey, mullein, red rasberry...these are my faves. especially the nettle.

I just want to say that I have been lurking here since the 6th watching the replies come in, since I have nothing to offer on this topic. Thanks to everyone who have offered these great ideas! I just love this tribe.
