Herb guilds

topic posted Sat, May 3, 2008 - 11:17 AM by  matt

I am planting a lot right now as we are heading into the rainy season. I would like to have
some herb guilds but unfortunately this requires cooking knowledge, which i am working
on expanding. I have an example of what i am talking about that i am planting now.

THAI GUILD

Tomato
Basil
Chili Peppers
Lemon grass
Garlic
Ginger
Chives
Mung Bean Sprouts

Does anyone have any other ideas for plant groupings that can all be used for specific dishes?
Or... any additions to this Thai guild?
Of course dwarf coconuts but i am working on that.

thank ya'll

    thai basil
    shallot
    cilantro
    galanga
kabocha (Japanese ingredient but is incredible in thai curries)

if you are really ambitious for long term plans for some thai dishes
    kaffir lime tree
    coconut palm

      also cucumber
      long beans
      green onions
      spearmint
      thai eggplant
napa cabbage, bok choi, something in that family
      swamp cabbage or spinach
      sugar snap/snow peas
      peanuts
      cumin
      cardamom

if you're going to go for the trees:
      tamarind
      bamboo (for shoots)
      grapefruit
      mango

      yum!
