Food is, as we have been saying for some time, the central battle for freedom and survival. "Change", which sounds great, has, in fact, become the mantra of those who seek corporate triumph over independent producers - and it's happening around food. The mechanism is simple: a set of bills ostensibly devoted to "food safety" and "food security" -- and a plan to put Big Agribiz supporters in charge.
In charge of what? Your food and mine - it's supply, farming, production, food quality, irradiation, Codex on your dinner table, unlabeled GMOs and other profitable, but lethal, corporate-friendly food strategies. Through appointments and legislation, the change is coming fast and furious which could even make our own family farms and gardens the site of criminal activity if we attempt to grow our own food or produce and sell it.
So sure are they of victory that the President of change is about to appoint Michael Taylor, a lawyer for, and former executive at Monsanto, to head the empowered "food (sic)k safety (sic)k" agency.

There is no language in HR 875 that would regulate, penalize, or shut down backyard gardens or
criminalize gardeners; the bill focuses on ensuring the safety of food in interstate commerce.
Farmer's markets would not be regulated, fined, or shut down, and would, in fact, benefit from
strict safety standards applied to imported food to ensure that unsafe imported food doesn't
compete with locally grown produce.
The bill would not prohibit or interfere with organic farming, or mandate the use of any chemicals
or types of seeds. The National Organic Program (NOP) is under the jurisdiction of the USDA.
HR 875 addresses food safety issues and falls under the jurisdiction of the FDA.
Monsanto and any other large agribusiness company had no part whatsoever in drafting this bill.

Go into your garden, pick some food, eat it. Tend to your relationships, grow them so they nourish you. Vitamins and supplements are a scam, food and community are good.

It feeds off of , and then feeds into the alienation and distrust that sees nefarious plots in anything sufficiently complicated enough to need actual thought to figure out. Once a critical mass of screaming ninnies is reached, and a search on a topic yields hundreds of copy cat garbage misinformation and little else, then folks feel comfortable "thinking" that it MUST be true, or so many people would not be so upset. It is a real problem and it is not going to go away on its own. I think it is a sacred responsibility of all who can figure this type of thing to shine as bright a light as they can bring to bear on the darkness that make this sort of thing possible, and, one must assume, somehow profitable. -

I'd assume it's really all just about money but it IS a bit hard not to wonder if there are other motivations when the person in question has spent their career developing sonic weapons, torture techniques and attempting to create "new earth" armies of supernatural warriors. A great way to disempower movements for change is to channel people's energy into dead end astroturf activism where they actually end up fighting against their own best interests (and real freedom of choice and informed consent). If you can sow the seeds of mistrust and make naive but earnest people look totally silly in the process, so much the better.
It's a bit hard to know what to make of it all since it's all so damn weird and twisted but it is worth having some idea of who one is dealing with - I first heard about Stubblebine from an excellent book titled The Men Who Stare At Goats by a British journalist.

The codex alimentarious is voluntary!!! for nations, not mandatory in the first place, and there is approximately zero chance that the u.s. or canadian govts would pass such legislation. It sets international standards for trade in herbs and supplements for less developed nations that do not have any. It is to be used in cases of internation disputes, and i think it a much much better idea than bombing the offending country for their slack ass practices. Please take some time to check it out!

I buy herbs from china regularly, and would like to feel better about the chance of them being contaminated with lead. This is a method for the world to regulate this sort of thing for the benefit of nations and peoples without the wherewithal to test for lead themselves.
The campaign against this bill was started and is continued by insane clowns aided by millions of people who are misled into fearing something that means them no ill, and actually the opposite. The bill is being fought by parties with something to gain from the continuance of the current unregulated system.

Unfortunately, both the European Supplements Directive and the Codex Alimentarius Vitamin and Mineral Guidelines were approved - despite your and our efforts to prevent this from happening. There is some good news as well: Both of these pieces of international legislation were heavily contested. Your signature and campaigns by others contributed to this. Consequently, neither the EU directive nor the Codex guidelines spell out detailed limits for supplements.

Yes, the provisions of the codex are not law in nations but guidelines and not mandatory. This is certainly not what the propaganda against it has been claiming for several years.

Sun, April 5, 2009 - 3:24 PMHmmm. I am so surprised at all the excitement these new proposed food bills have created. Our food system is quite a mess, it seems, and that leaves many of us unsure about its security. I've seen this on other tribes, too.
I try to practice the below two guidelines to avoid panic in these situations.
1. trust I'm doing my part by continuing to support locals (purchasing )and organics (purchasing and growing)
2. when I see info or news about something startling, read it with an open mind, relax the fear response, and find a source I know I can trust (i.e. it's their job to keep on top of this stuff). there are a lot of non-profits out there that do this for us. I may not have mulch for brains, but I admit i'm not that thoroughly knowledgeable on government, policies, and the situation of the food system (except what I learn through my job). my sources for info are Food and Water Watch, Cornucopia Institute (I work here - we just did an analysis of three of the new food safety bills and have suggestions for concerned people), and a couple others my mind is blanking on right now but I can share if anyone is interested.
Sum of these bills from cornucopia - nothing RIGHT NOW to worry about, but there is always the need to voice our wants and needs to those in power who don't yet know what mulch even is (to continue Fifi's fun expression) and need some compost in their brains.
