Re: its Strawberry time
Thu, May 21, 2009 - 9:04 PMI have just three Alpine Strawberry plants and they produce berries most of the year round. I didn't realize there was a season. You must have a lot of plants. Good luck with the harvest and enjoy them! -Freya -

Thu, May 21, 2009 - 9:53 PMOne of my guys in the nursing home was out watering with me today (I planted a big garden for them) and was describing the process of extracting juice from a store-bought strawberry. "First you get vice grips.. Then a hammer.. You may break the hammer, so have another one on hand.." -

Re: its Strawberry time
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 8:45 AMI hear that placing copper around the base of the plant will keep slugs away...I have strawberries and lately i notice tiny green bugs and look like they make little webs on the leaves and then the leaves look like they are dying. Any thoughts as to what these bugs are and how to get rid of them safely please?...I made the mistake of getting this plant from a shop that had many plants crowded together and I dont think the stock was guaranteed to be resistant to certain things.
Thank you,
Petra :) -

Re: its Strawberry time
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 12:50 PMSounds like spider mites. There are some eco-friendly products out there or you can make your own. I use a peppermint spray I get at my local nursery, but I know Ace, Lowes and even Walmart are carrying these safer products now. I can't remember the recipe to make your own an I'm sure someone more experience can answer that one. -Freya

Re: its Strawberry time
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 10:38 AMMine are sitting there half ripe- edible, but not spectacular due to some cool cloudy weather. I can smell them when I walk by and hoping no largish omnivores smell them while they're walking by before I can get to them. The birds are currently foiled by some netting and it's a waiting game. Hoping to have enough to dry some this year, but we'll see.... I know a lot of them are going to end up in strawberry/wild huckleberry/yogurt crepes for breakfasts.
I also have alpines which I'm fond of, but I don't agree with the common assertion (propaganda) that they are more intensely flavored than the common large garden strawberry. They are good though. Yellow Wonder, a white/yellow fruited type (less attractive to birds) is my favorite alpine so far. It has a tropical flavor, or some say like champagne. Plant a dozen or more for full satisfaction from this small fruit. -

Re: its Strawberry time
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 11:03 PMMy dad has grown rhubarb for years in Ireland, he always says you need to cut it right down to the roots at least every two years and let it grow back or.. well I'm not sure, it'll get woody, or stop growing or something. -

Re: its Strawberry time
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 3:52 AMI'm building a wire mesh "fruit cage" for my strawberries to keep squirrels/birds away from the fruit...How tall can strawberry plants get?
Thank you,
Petra :) -

Re: its Strawberry time
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 5:06 PM18 inches--chicken wire can help--birds are a tough one.,they keep the bugs down.,and enjoy your fruit for you.,starlings and cherries is a bad mix--starlings bury thier heads in the cherries and you can hear them pop-- -

Re: its Strawberry time
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 5:36 PM18 inches...thank you....The plants are on a balcony and spiders take care of the bug problem...the huge problem is raccoons and squirrels...some animal is pulling the strawberries partially out of the soil so i gotta make sure they cant get their little paws close to the fruit...I going to use mesh with tiny openings so hopefully it'll be ok....I saw some flowers opening up today, i tried to help pollenation with a q-tip but im not too sure i did it right...and i forgot i had to seperate species of berry and possibly put pollen on the wrong plants :P so we'll see what happens...oh wait, do the early blooming "Earliglow" have flowers now and the "Sparkle Supreme" will have flowers later on in the summer, or no? -
-
Re: its Strawberry time
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 5:47 PMeirliglo would be my guess.,if this is your first year on the strawberries the main thing is.,stop the runners--and ive been told to pinch the first flowers off--too build better root systems--most berries dont really kick in till second or third year--if your berries dont just jump--dont worry--give them time--enjoy--

protecting Strawberries
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 4:43 PMI just got my bare-root "Sparkle Supreme" and "Earliglow" strawberries in the mail... I made a soil mix of "azalia soil" ,topsoil, and "african violet" , and cactus(sandy) soil with a bit of bone meal stirred in...Im trying to get the right PH,drainage, and nutrients...What soil mixes are you guys using?
And I was thinking of making a wire mesh plant cage using c-rings to keep squirrels and raccoons off of my balcony garden...im afraid to use netting because i hear birds/rodents can tangle themselves in it and i dont want that...any ideas for how to make a contraption to keep the berries from being nibbled by critters?
