Re: Composting...
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 6:10 PMTry red worms...they will help to break the organic matter down faster..You can make a box with a screen bottom (the 1/2 inch wire stuff works best) ...then feed the worms with the kitchen waste....have the box sit on top of another container that will catch the castings from the worms...cover the whole thing with a lid to keep the smell down....the worms will work up from the bottom so the new waste goes on top and the new castings will fall through the bottom and be ready to use...
happy composting

Re: Composting...
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 6:44 PMI just got a worm bin, and i like it. I think the suggestion for using a bucket is just for a collection container, and not for composting. I don't think it works to just compost inside in a bucket. Perhaps i'm wrong, i don't remember ever trying it. Anyway, i like the worms. Here is a video on setting up a worm bin in an apartment. There are lots of youtube videos on vermiculture evidently.

Tue, March 25, 2008 - 8:51 PMyeah i agree that worm bin is the way to go. i have a huge one out side the kitchen window that we just open the window and scrape goes the food down below.
for an apartment, i would suggest making your bin out of two old drawers. i watched the video link above. same instructions but also cut out the base of one drawer. staple 1 x 1 wire onto the bottom. then drill holes and add bedding, food, and shredded paper cover. After a month or so you can simply shake the top box gently and your finished compost will sift down to the bottom drawer. Check for wormies and add any stragglers back to the top. then use the compost sparingly or make some compost tea for maximum benefit.
