does anyone know of a source for non hybridized marigolds?
the old varieties were said to be an excellent deterrent to insects, but the modern varieties have been hybridized and diluted.

I just saw some seeds for heirloom marigolds on Park Seed's website today. I can't get into the website - it may be having issues. But they were some small French Marigolds with red centers.
fyi - they do have some bad press on this site: davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3/ -

I was able to get on the site. Oh - I have ordered from them, but did not encounter the problems mentioned in the previous post. The heirloom variety is here www.parkseed.com/gardening/PD/1388/ called Marigold Tiger Eyes / Tagetes patula Tiger Eyes.
Bright-Eyed Blooms are an Heirloom Treasure! The boldest bicolor yet!
Why can't all heirloom varieties be as easy to grow and drop-dead gorgeous as Tiger Eyes? If you're a vegetable grower, you may have already heard that Marigolds actually kill as many (or more) root knot nematodes as commercial pesticides. Plant them very freely around your veggies (particularly Tomatoes and Peppers, on which nematodes feast), and I guarantee you'll see a big difference in the success rate of your plants.
The other marigold you may be looking for is Marigold Golden Guardian / Tagetes patula Golden Guardian www.parkseed.com/gardening/PD/1308
These Big Golden Blooms Control Nematodes More Effectively than Chemical Pesticides. -

Fri, May 1, 2009 - 7:17 AMIs the book "Roses love Garlic'? I use that for learning about companion planting. I just planted commerical marigolds around all my tomato plants last weekend. I have a big nematode problem in So Cal. I'll look into the heirloom seeds tonight!

Fri, May 1, 2009 - 8:25 AMHey lorenzo. These look good to me for antique varieties. The harlequin is cool looking.

Harlequin
This antique variety dates back to 1870 and has recently become popular again. It is quite unique with its yellow-and-red-striped flowers that are both charming and flashy. It makes a good cut flower, too!
Sweet Mace or Mexican Mint
(Tagetes lucida) Enjoy this late-blooming marigold in teas, drinks; a great flavoring for many dishes. This old Hispanic heirloom is hard to find nowadays, but is still a great garden plant that is easy to grow and quite flavorful.
