Terra cotta pots are the best and I used organic potting soil mixed with some sand because rosemary doesn't like too much moisture. I find it best to drench it every few days and then let it alone. Afternoon sun has been the most successful position for me and my rosemary has more than quadrupled in size this year. It flowered as well. I fertilize about every 6 weeks. It is difficult to grow as a perennial, depending on where you are, but if you just want it for one season most any type will be fine. Rosemary ARP is the most hardy if you're in a northern area, although I believe if you're much north of zone 6 it's pretty iffy. I have some barbeque rosemary now growing quite well in a pot. I use a mixture of 1 part each perlite, peat, vermiculite and horse manure or other compost. Put the pot in an area that gets a full day of sun and depending on if you get rain, probably water fully about 2 times per week. That's based on Kentucky weather which is hot and humid. Generally rosemary likes really well drained soil and not too rich a soil. Good luck. Root hormone would help but isnt organic. The problem with potted plants here is that they always tend to dry out. Plastic pots help keep the water, also a larger pot would help . And you should add vermaculite to the soil, because it makes the soil much more moist. And finally I like the type that droops, but the christmas tree looking ones are cool too. I've not had great success with this in the past and if memory serves me, rosemary is not a big fan of pots. Nevertheless, I'd like to try once again. It's been a few years since I tried, so I can't recall what I did or didn't do to make it fail. Does anyone have any tips for me?
