i live in a tiny one bedroom apartment that has about 8 square feet of arable land outside of it... anybody know anything that would do well in that kind of a space? or is there anything that would survive inside of my apartment (which doesn't get direct sunlight)?

i would like to be able to at least supplement my diet with something grown by my own hands- but i don't know where to start under such restrictions.

thanks

Think salads. Many things good in salads do well in 5 gallon buckets.

Tomatos being one, lettuce, spinach, celery.

Also consider composting in a covered rubbermaid type container so you have good compost to put into the buckets under the soil. It will really help things grow while keeping things out of landfills and in the environment where they belong.

Be sure to dump the buckets back into your compost when you are done and mix them around to refresh and redistribute the nutrients.

nasturtiums will grow with limited or indirect sunlight, they are easy to start, and don't take long to flower either (the flowers are edible).

8 sq feet is plenty!!! There have been plenty of times I would have killed for 8 sq feet.

If it gets direct sun you could have a tomato plant, a cuc, a zuc, and some basil and chives. If it doesn’t get a lot of sun maybe plant some spinach, arugula, radishes, and a pea plant or to help feed Nitregen back into the soil. The amount of space shouldn’t really limit what you can grow – just how much. I would use a shovel to turn over the soil, add a little compost, and plant the seedlings. Enjoy!

lettuces lettuces! you can grow all kinds of salad greens in shadier smaller gardens.

and also ----- peas seem to tolerate some shade without suffering from "lack-of-sunlight-flavorlessness" :D and can grow vertically (a lovely way to make more space)

yeah, its great. i use the concept in my raised beds. i just draw square boxes in the soil with my finger and plant stuff accordingly. planting biointensively like this is great because it reduces weeds because they get shaded out, it reduces watering because the ground is shaded mostly because everything is close together and it is great for urban gardening because you can plant so much in a small space.

i used to teach children's gardening and we used this method. kids love it.
