global warming, what ever...i live in wv....all our volunteers from the compost: tomatoes and sunflowers, cosmos, calendula have started to grow vigorously we have had a few cool knights, but nothing has stopped the growth....
i am not going to rush out and plant, but i am wondering of any folk signs or whatever.....i really think i could plant seeds outside
any thoughts from you all?

Thu, May 8, 2008 - 1:05 PMYour area Extension program should be able to help. I found this on a quick search: www.wvu.edu/~agexten/hortcult/homegard/

Re: i am wondering if plant out date is now.....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 11:24 PMI would suggest that if you feel comfortable planting outside to go ahead and do it. If a late frost comes, you can always put your reuse skill to the test and gather some old milk jugs and newspaper. Line the milk jugs (after washing out all the nasty) with the newspaper and cover the plants. Then you can cover that with a sheet or some netting to hold it down. Uncover when temperatures come back up.
(five gallon buckets work well for larger plants) -

Re: i am wondering if plant out date is now.....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:33 PMPossibly yes. From my understanding of keeping plants alive during a late frost, the newspaper acts as an insulation and keeps the edges of the plant from touching the milk carton directly. Newspaper conducts heat much less than plastic, and gives the plants an extra protective barrier.
