Raccoon deterrent

I need a fairly inexpensive way to deter a raccoon from my yard. It's illegal to trap and relocate raccoons where I live, so I can't do that. I, of course, don't want to kill it either. Last year we didn't have any problems with them, but this year I want to nip it in the bud before it gets bad. Plus I'm planning on growing corn and other veggies a raccoon will undoubtedly find rather tasty.

Now I have two large dogs. They mostly live inside though, esp. when the weather isn't nice and they sleep inside at night. The way my yard is set up there is a fence that divides it in half so that the dogs can't access the garden area. The last time they got back there they dug up an entire raised bed, so I don't really want them back there. However, I'm open to the idea of occasionally letting them back there supervised to mark if anyone thinks their scent will help. Last year our gate didn't lock so they got back there quite often to do their "business" much to my chagrin. However, now I'm thinking that may have not been such a bad thing because we had NO raccoon issue then.

Anyways, does anyone have any advice on how to deal with raccoons?

Where I live the critters tend to take over. The only people I know with successful gardens are the ones who completely fence their gardens. 4 X 4 X 8 posts and wire mesh around all sides and on the top. The wire mesh also needs to go at least 8" down into the ground.
But you may not need such a substantial enclosure.

I used to use coyote urine to keep the raccoons away. You can get it in either powder form and sprinkle it around the perimeter of the gardens, or in liquid form... it comes with little containers you can put on fence posts. It does need to be reapplied every so often... whenever i got lazy about it, the raccoons would figure it out and come back. But coyote is a natural predator of raccoons... so it really just scares them away. It does smell a little, but dissipates quickly. I recently moved and have a new batch of raccoons to contend with, so I guess I'll have to see if the urine works on these guys too. Good luck!

The only way to get rid of raccoons (and many other animals) that works without you having to either build massive fencing is to use a automatic scarecrow sprinkler. You can read more about it on racoon deterrent

"of course you don't want to kill them"

Why not ? They're good to eat, and are more nutricious than your vegie's.
Some I trap, then I shoot them. Others I live trap, then release them in people's yards who put up political signs for nobama.
