tips for moss removal from the roof?

topic posted Tue, April 22, 2008 - 5:59 PM by  Jean
Hi!

I've heard of some sort of copper strip technique, but I'm not sure of the effectiveness. Can anyone provide any info or alternative suggestions?

I'm afraid if I get up there with the powerwasher I will destroy my shingles!

Thanks,
Jean

I really need some good tips too! My neighbor told me that she uses a solution of water and biodegradable dishsoap on her roof. I haven't tried it yet because I'm lazy... and I have a hard time believing that it will clean all that moss off. I'll report back if I actually do it!

if you can find a local bonsai club, the members often flip out over free moss offerings. moss makes great bonsai pot topping - and you might even find someone who'll remove it for you.

hmmm ... cringing, on second thought ...

Thats a great idea, Chili. Even though a detergent says it is "bio-degradable, it is still a detergent and I imagine it can still be toxic to some extent. So, if it is possible to re-use the moss then the bonsai folks do not need to spend the energy making or getting moss; BUT in Portland Oregon if you stand still long enough moss will grow on your head, bonsai folks probably have a plethora of varieties of moss to choose from and an ample supply there, but I don't really know bonsai creators. I just like the idea of re-use to reduce the need for new by recycling the already made. Dig it? Take care, madmark

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable having folks wandering around on my roof. It would be much easier to harvest the moss growing in the yard!

As MadMark says, there is no shortage of moss around here!
