A local nusery had seeds on sale and I bought a bunch for this year's winter garden and also for next spring (they're all packed for 2010). One of the seeds I bought is Quinoa. As some of you may know my space is very limited and I mostly have to grow in containers. I do have a very small raised bed but it doesn't get much light in the winter time. Does anyone know about growing Quinoa in a container, or even growing it at all?
Thanks,
Sara

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 2:43 AMYeah, i know a little about it. I do not think it would be practical in a container. The plants get big! They take full season, and do not yield a whole lot per sq ft. I take it does not freeze where you are in the winter, but you do not have much light where your containers are. I would think tomatoes or peppers would be good in the summertime, if you get enough light then. For winter, maybe herbs, but i don't know. There are a lot of good things that can be grown through the summer and then kept alive in low light winter situation, a technique known as "stockpiling" but it is hard to put a lot of growth on plants in winter's low light regardless of temp.
I like quinoa a lot, but it is hard to grow even in a garden where i live and in most places. It needs a dry late ripening season and for harvest and we are quite wet in the fall here. It is very pretty though. Most varieties grow to about 6 ft tall and wide too.
