Its been very hot and dry here and the grasshopper population is insane. I have hundreds of babies munching every thing in site. I put some DE around the tender greens a few days ago and it seems to be working, The only problem with it is that it has to be replaced daily because the water washes it away every time I feed the plants. One of my gardener friends gave me some NOLO Bait to try. I understand the gist of what it does. Has anyone had luck with it. Does it actually work??

Re: Grasshoppers and NOLO BAIT
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 6:06 PMI have the same problem. Never seen them anywhere near this bad before. I wasn't familiar with NOLO bait, so i looked it up. It is not cheap, but i'm glad to know about it. I'd like to know how it works out for you.

Re: Grasshoppers and NOLO BAIT
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 8:11 AMI had the same problem earlier in the year. I think it's because we had a rather mild winter. My solution was the desert iguanas. Turned out I had a nice little colony living around me. I did kill quite a few grasshoppers myself but the iguanas feasted on them and cleaned out the population within a week.

Re: Grasshoppers and NOLO BAIT
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 7:57 AMI have done NOLO bait for about four years in a row and it has definitely beat the population (which was of Biblical plague proportions) back...i also did Guinea hens which eat about 200--300 a day....
Try keeping things well weeded (the hoppers like the tall stuff) and also overhead watering keeps them off....
I swear we are in trouble if we get a plague of hoopers in this country...
Oh yeah you can eat the little buggers, too..
happy munching

Re: Grasshoppers and NOLO BAIT
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 1:12 PMThanx everyone... It seems to be working slowly. My gardening is a little differant than most peoples because I am in the high desert mountains. The only things that are fresh and green are in my garden so the grasshoppers naturally gravitate there. There are litterally hundreds of babies within the garden space. Since most of the plants are just popping (our last frost was june 13th) they are really feasting on the seedlings, and I can't put the chickens in yet because they will eat the seedlings too. But MONSOON season is really close.... looking into the sky we may get lucky and get our first one today. Once monsoon really starts, all the desert turns green and blooms.... thats when the grasshoppers disperse into the outlying areas and away from my garden. Till then I am going to keep trying to keep them from destroying everything.... LOL -

Re: Grasshoppers and NOLO BAIT
Sun, July 13, 2008 - 5:25 PMNice reprieve from the hoppers. The monsoons started! Between the Nolo Bait, D earth, and the monsoons my garden is coming back to life. I had to replant a few of the beans but everything else made it through pretty good. The Nolo bait definantly attracts then to it.. I found hoppers in the little traps every day. It brought down the population quick. I also noticed that the gardens with horehound and other mints didn't get touched at all. They also avoided the feverfew. Next year I'm gonna use that to my advantage with companion planting.
