I ate an organic nectarine and it was delicious. Then I ate a commercial nectarine and it tasted like sweet chemical crap.
Same store, same ripeness. . .just a test. . .and I couldn't eat all of the commercial nectarine.

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 9:06 AMYep. Once you experience real food its hard to go back. I haven't bought a tomato or a bag of lettuce in two years. I look at it in the store and it just doesn't look good. -

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 9:22 AMTrue, though I bought some non-organically grown Heirloom varieties at the market the other day - so locally grown on a small farm that specializes in growing tomatoes, not commercially farmed and shipped - and they are delicious. (The farm I get my basket from hasn't done very well with tomatoes this year - so far anyway - and since summer is the only time we get really tasty tomatoes where I live then this will do!) Taste has a lot to do with the variety grown, how ripe the fruit or veg is when picked and how long it sits in storage. While I try to stick with organic for a variety of reasons, I'll buy produce locally grown by small farms too and find it's just as tasty. Next year I'm going to experiment with growing my own again (I moved this spring so it wasn't very practical this year). There really is no crappier "food" than the nasty textured and mealy, pink, tasteless commercial tomato.
It IS really fun to introduce people to organic tomatoes in particular since almost everyone is surprised by the taste (and often it brings up childhood memories too). Mmmm, taste....

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 11:34 AMI did that same experiment with apples a few years ago in Ireland. I had my in-laws give it a try and they both agreed that the organic tasted much better. My mother-in-law said that it tasted like when she was a kid and that she had forgotten how good food used to taste. My father-in-law agreed and this is coming from someone who gardens with every chemical in the book and had told me that it didn't change the taste prior to this little experiment. -Freya -

Tue, August 25, 2009 - 3:41 PMLucky you! I do agree .At the moment, it's great to experience 'real food' just cooked stuffed corgette, french beans , roast potatoes and plum crumble for six and cost less and tasted way better! It's a wonderful feeling! -

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 3:08 PMI don't think this is really and adequate experiment. I mean, if the nectarines had been from the same area, and of he same variety, and you knew they had been picked at the same level of ripeness, then you could say organic food tastes better. While I only garden organically, and try support Organic farms, I think that locally grown things, that are grown in reasonably sized fields, by farmers who are not interested in mono-cropping, are the vegetables that taste the best, regardless of whether or not they're grown organically. -

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 7:43 AMEveryone's different so making dogmatic statements about food - even if based upon one's own body's reactions - doesn't make sense (and tends towards an odd form of attempting to control others). Generally speaking, eating sugar and protein at the same time can give a lot of people gas so if you're all farty after having eggs and a glass of orange juice in the morning that's why, it's not because either is "bad" to eat in the morning. Best thing to do is to listen to your own body but don't assume that everyone else is exactly the same as you in their energy needs, how they digest and what and how they like and need to eat. Eat food not dogma! ;-) And enjoy whatever your chosen foods and ways of eating are....not that I *want* to be dogmatic so please feel free to have any kind of relationship with your food as you like.

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 12:28 PMWhen it comes to personal taste I don't think that you can do a scientific experiment to determine best flavor since it is so subjective. However, I think that if you find something that you like better and it is better for you that you should eat it. I found it interesting to talk to much older people who grew up on farms and hear their opinions on this topic. I do think fresher is better, but fresh and organic is the best of all. -Freya

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 2:38 PMWell obviously he wanted to suss out wether it was true that home grown is tastier,! with so much hype it's bound to confuse.... It's so much easier to buy fruit cheaply at a supermarket, and if you are are watching the pennies, and not used to organic, home grown produce, it doesn't ocurr to most people to grow their own or try it out .....At least he bothered....most people don't even try. -

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 6:38 AMWhat's up Mandy? Both the fruits in the experiment were bought in a store, neither was home grown. Not sure if you've been around this tribe for long but everyone here is here because they support growing and eating organic food (apart from the occasional spammer). Some of us consider eating locally when possible important too - for instance, I am part of a CSA so directly support a local, organic farmer. I'd suspect that most of us prefer locally grown organic food - either that we grow ourselves or get through belonging to a CSA. Personally I try to stay away from commercially farmed organic food that's shipped in as much as possible so I prefer to buy from a local farmer at the market even when it's not organic than a supermarket. We each have to decide for ourselves what we can stomach ethically and how and what we want to eat.

Re: Did an Experiment This Morning. .
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 11:46 AMOrganic, is no longer organic. If you can grow veggies and fruit without is getting eaten by bugs, without usin pesticides. Than I want your secret. I grow numerous amounts of fruits and vegetables in my yard, i have cucumber, tomato, watermelon, peas, cantaloupe, celantro, and radishes. I have and probably always will have problems with bugs.... just because... you cant get rid of them without some kind of pesticide. I will tell you what, i do grow very good veg/fru, and i cannot tell the difference between organic and non-organic. Tell me something I don't know. watch this www.youtube.com/watch -

Sat, September 5, 2009 - 10:44 PMPenn and Teller videos are full of edited actors spewing half truths. Great for a giggle but hardly a good source of information. They are right up there with John Stossel.
