Does anyone know anything about growing tomatillos? We have a tomatillo plant in our garden. It is COVERED with flowers. I also see a lot of new flowers getting ready to open, but I don't see any baby tomatillos. I've seen them in the store and there are very tiny things that could either be new flowers getting ready to open or very small tomatillos.

Thanks,

I found discussions where they were talking about this, john, and tomatillos seem to do a whole lot better with several planted for pollination. i did not know this and it is a good thing to know.

Thanks, Wil. I don't think we have the purple variety. I guess that means we aren't going to get any tomatillos. They were sort of an experiment anyway. Neither my wife nor I know how to use them in cooking. I was definitely looking forward to learning using my own home grown tomatillos. That'll have to wait for another time.

I don't think you need another variety. You just need more than one plant. I don't reckon you can take a clone off one plant.......that makes no sense. I reckon you need another seedling of any variety. Don't know why that would be, but that is what folks on those threads seem to be saying, and it fits our experiences here. I've got a row of them, and they are covered with the little swelling paper lanterns. They sure do better here than tomatoes! Pretty plants. I like them.

Here in Colorado tomatillos grow like weeds. I usually have had two plants but this year I only made room for one. I don't have a lot of fruit yet, but I chalked it up to our unusually cool, wet summer. Maybe it's a lack of pollination, but they're starting to get fruit. I hope you've given it time and maybe you'll get some.

If you do end up with tomatillos, search online for tomatillo salsa recipes. Yum!

when I grew tomatillos, I noticed that they set fruit all at once, kinda like "determinate" tomatoes. when the plants get to a mature size, they flower and set fruit, and most of it ripens at the same time. I like both the purple and green ones, though I noticed the green tomatillos generally bore more fruit.

mmmmm tomatillo salsa rocks my enchilada boat:

small lidded pot 1/2 full of (shucked?) tomatillos, sliced in half
    handful cilantro
1-5 hot chiles (jalapeño or serrano or habañero if you dare)
    3-5 garlic cloves, peeled
1 lime, cut into chunks, peel and all
water to just cover above ingredients.

cover and simmer on low for about half an hour. use immersion blender to puree. salt or vinegar to taste. enjoy!

I've liked the green better than the purple so far, which I didn't really expect. They grow like weeds here now. The best one I had actually productivity, ease of processing and flavor was a huge green one. I make two types of salsa using the green, as in unripe, fruits. I will sometimes use the riper fruits in fresh salsa, but I don't care for them a whole lot. the green fruits have a fresh acidic bite to them.

green salsa: Green tomatillos, green chilis (fire roasted with most of the black char scraped off) cilantro, salt

Brown salsa: Green tomatillos, oven roasted dried mild red chilis (like dried anahiem or new mexico chilis, be sure to deseed them), cilantro, salt.

In both cases cook the tomatillos till just cooked then mix all ingredients in blender till smooth. eat fresh, can in a water bath, or freeze. Use plenty of salt, it's a condiment.

I'll have to try the lime thing, never thought of that.
