What's your favorite seed company? I personally like companies that sell heirloom seeds. My personal fave is Seed Savers Exchange, but I'm interested if there are any similar companies out there. I have a Territorial Seed Company Catalog and a Burpee catalog, but they don't have the rare/hard to find seeds that SSE has.

Pinetree Garden Seeds in Maine (www.superseeds.com) They have a wide variety of seeds in half-size packets for the home gardener. I never plant all the seeds in a packet from my local gardening store. Since I live in Ohio, I figure that anything that will grow in Maine will do nicely in my garden.

i think that these people are pretty amazing. although they do not come out and say that they are organic, they do not sell modified product. they have a very diverse and interesting catalogue. it is my understanding that they also deliver to the states.

Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, Iowa.

from the website: "Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit organization that saves and shares the heirloom seeds of our garden heritage, forming a living legacy that can be passed down through generations. When people grow and save seeds, they join an ancient tradition as stewards, nurturing our diverse, fragile, genetic and cultural heritage.

Our organization is saving the world’s diverse, but endangered, garden heritage for future generations by building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants, while educating people about the value of genetic and cultural diversity. Few gardeners comprehend the true scope of their garden heritage or how much is in immediate danger of being lost forever.

Heritage Farm, SSE’s scenic 890-acre headquarters near Decorah, Iowa, is a living museum of historic varieties. Amish carpenters have constructed an inspirational meeting area in the barn’s cathedral-like loft, and also a complex of offices and seed storage facilities that feature a magnificent oak post-and-beam frame. This unique educational center is designed to maintain and display collections of endangered food crops. Each summer an estimated 5,000 visitors tour Heritage Farm’s organic Preservation Gardens, Historic Orchard, and Ancient White Park cattle."

People all over the world send their seeds here. The farm is certified organic. It's such an awesome place! Thanks for this great topic, very informative!

Though I haven't actually ordered from them yet, I have bought their seeds, and if you want some traditional italian seeds in tremendous quantities for the price, I really like the American distributor of Francho Sementi seeds, www.growitalian.com They do have organic seeds, and a newsletters with tips on growing....

Great selection of lettuces, tomatoes, etc.

Thanks for all the great links, there are a few I haven't heard of before. I love checking out different seed companies.

One I didn't notice mentioned yet is High Mowing.

High quality/high vigor organic seeds. Great people, I used to work there a number of years ago.

Uh.. I like Fedco. Cheap, good quantities, good germination, good service, supporters of organic agriculture, cooperative.. Go FedCo!

The Harvest Moon/Italian Seed and Tool/Gourmet Seed International folks have an interesting selection, but I've had problems with service and germination. Many of the seeds are treated and most are from Europe. I don't use them much, but have found a few varieties that I plan to continue to grow by saving seed. One is Sigaretta di Bergamo AKA Sigaretta Dulce. It is the best peperoncini I've ever trialed. Also, Giant Bulgarian Leek is the best Leek I've ever grown. I've grown a lot of both to find that out. A winner from Fedco is the new Golden Detroit Beet. While I'm on Varieties. Tuchon Carrot is killer. I think I get that from nichols, but can't remember for sure. Trying to save seed, but what a pain in the ass with the carrots!

I am surprised that the company I work for (yes I know, I am BIASED! but at least I'm not CORPORATE!!) Peaceful Valley is not on this list as often as it should be.

    Organic of a wonderful variety.

    Bulk Organic!!!

AND we carry other organic seed company's material, so that it is easier (and cheaper) to order them.

I placed an order with horizon herbs (I do like their selection and they have many organic seeds) but several did not sprout at all, and many other packets had too low a sprouting rate. (we have a garden in zone 23 and in zone 21 so we planted a couple of months ago) They don't give you a lot of seeds either! I just emailed the company informing them of their unacceptable sprouting rate. I wonder if they will respond. I guess they lost me as a customer....

This thread is very interesting to me because I like some unusual/interesting varieties and herbs. I will have to try a few of the ones mentioned here. I should probably look for one near my climatic zone.

Interesting report about horizon herbs seed. I've had excellent luck with sprouting rates and adequate numbers of seeds per packet with them, but haven't bought any seed from them in a couple of years. I think the owners have great integrity and i imagine they will respond to your email (although they may be super busy right now in the prime of gardening season).

I got a response but not an adequate one....apparently they do not care in the least bit to keep me as a customer. I will not be buying from them again, that's for sure. If they gave me last year seeds the least they could have done is give me new seeds, or reimburse my money. I spent a bit of money for their seeds and I do feel ripped off.

I normally have pretty good luck sprouting and my rate with other seed suppliers (and my own seeds I had saved from last year) has been wonderful this year. I got a lot in the ground already, just need to get my squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and beans.

A lot of herbs are difficult to sprout. A propagation mat really helps a lot.

Wil. I usually have no problems sprouting, and equivalent crops did sprout from other seed sources....and one of the seeds was corn, Corn does sprout easily, so do greens. I think the seeds were old.

We do use a terrarium for sprouting peppers, I wonder what the difference is with a propagation mat.

You are right, if corn and greens didn't sprout the seeds were likely old or something. Lots of seeds like warm soil and a consistent temperature to sprout in and germination is quicker and at a much higher rate than without bottom heat. I've found that with a lot of difficult seeds a propagation mat makes all the difference. They are expensive these days though.
