I take my seeds from my Avocados and soak them halfway in water rolling them every other day then I peel them and keep soaking them half way in water until they sprout I do not like the toothpick method it just seems somewhat barbaric I separate the sprouted seeds (about 40 percent) and continue to let them grow making sure they are always halfway in water after they begin to grow leaves I then separate them from the rest soak there roots in water (put them through a strofoam board) with a small amount of epsom salt and some water solable fertilizer) I slowly whisk the water one to two times a day for about 10 seconds I have 3 plants to grow quite successfully until.... I did make the mistake of introducing them to outside conditions and planting them in leafy loam soil that I thought was prepared well they promptly died within a few weeks I have however continued the same seed process and have one currently on hydrophonics and two more that have not yet sprouted leaves. They need to be grafted with a scion of an improved variety. All of our apples, peaches, pears etc are done this way, and avocados too. They are harder to graft than most other fruit trees though, and i would advise you to get a haas variety from a nursery. They are much better fruit, much more of it, and also a shorter wider tree ( as i understand it) or perhaps it is that grafted trees are shorter and wider than seedling avocados regardless of scion. Anyway, with as much time, effort and resources that go into growing a tree, you might want to make the investment in a tree. They should be available at local nurseries there. This one was/is really funny.The other ones that I've grown have put down roots long before the stem started growing. The stem started growing after about 10 weeks without any root. last week, with the stem about 4" tall, the roots started. Now the stem is about 6" tall and the root is just over an inch. Other than that, it is doing really well. Of course, this is a seed with several toothpicks in it then suspended in a jar of water. Because they are hybrids, the resulting tree will not be the same as where the pit came from and most likely will not produce fruit. The first is doing well as it kept both sides after it split and sprouted roots. It sent up two leaf nodes and has five leaves. I suggested transplanting, and my roommate finally conceded. He put it in a small plastic container with organic soil and a little organic soil builder. It looks a little poorly. The second lost half its nut but seems to still be alive. Any and all tips tricks for growing avocado trees would be greatly appreciated. I live in Southern California near San Bernadino, on the western edge of what I consider the desert.
