I just picked my first couple of tomatoes this year from a new hybrid variety I'm growing called 'Better Boy'. I have it growing in an area of the garden that only gets direct sunlight from about 8am till noon, I keep it well watered and the soil is a combination of 1/3 native soil, 1/3 compost and 1/3 organic miracle grow soil. One of them had a healed split down the side and I am just wondering what causes that to happen and what can I do, if anything to prevent it? -Freya

Re: What causes tomatoes to split?
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 10:43 AMI had that problem and it got a bit better when I cut back on how much I was watering them. Tomatoes are pretty hardy plants and don't need as much water as you might think. The split tomatoes still taste as yummy as any of the others. -

Re: What causes tomatoes to split?
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 10:49 AMThanks. We had three days of very heavy rain last week. I wonder. My husband and I try to only water when the soil is dry and in the desert that can be every other day when it's hot. I must say it was the best tomato I've had in a long time. It has a very strong flavor which I like. Freya -

Re: What causes tomatoes to split?
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 12:24 PMYeah, I agree with the overwatering. Also some varieties are more prone to splitting than others. -

My Dad always told me it is better to dry out the tomato plant - it stresses it to produce more tomatoes vs overwatering. He always had more tomatoes growing than we could eat for a family of eight. -
