Rainbow Chard just won't grow up!

Hello All!
I've been growing rainbow chard since March/April and it seems to be stuck at a height of six inches. Is this normal? I am still enjoying the baby leaves but it would be nice if they were larger too! Does anyone know how I can get them to grow?

Thanks!!

    Hey Laurie:

I am growing rainbow and ruby red chard in pretty heavy soil and it is doing fine. I just make sure that the soil is well amended. You may want to try some fish emulsion or a liquid seaweed product. Lime also balances out the soil. Do you add compost to your dirt...another great thing to do. It also likes to get enough water to thrive.

I once had this problem and read in a book that you can raze the chard to the ground (like, take off all the leaves) and it will regrow to be much bigger than it was before. I did it, in spite of my trepidation, and it worked perfectly.

I also had to move a couple of little chard plants once -- something was weird with the soil, I guess, because they loved their new homes and did wonderfully.

This year, my chard has been poopy, too. I tried the razing them to the ground thing, and they grew back to be small yet again. I guess the next step is to move them.

    Good luck!
