Every year I try to grow fennel, and every year I get weak, spindly plants that just won't grow... or if they do, they are incredibly tough when I try to eat them. This is maddening, because fennel grows so freely along the highways around town! Why won't it grow in my garden?!
I have tried growing from seed and starts.
I have the same problem with dill, to some extent.

Re: Fennel woes
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 6:38 AMi think there are different types of fennel, some are meant for eating the bulbs, others are meant for use of seeds. i had some fennel that i grew in NEw MExico that was out of control and it's not really native there. i watered it a lot and it got tons of sun (of course). in california it grows like crazy in drainage ditches while getting lots of sun, also. have you tried adding fertilizer? -

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:19 AMI'm not sure, but I have sandy soil and it's alkaline. My fennel grows like a monster in it. Maybe this is the key?
