My friend sprays before she plants and has good results.....
I also have an organic gardening friend who swears by putting slugs and snails in a blender!!! and pourring the contents around the plants!! YUCK! I have resorted to organic pellets this year.

Re: Snails!
Wed, May 19, 2010 - 4:19 PMuse the search engine here in this tribe -- there's TONS of previous threads about snails and slugs.
my favorite ways to deal with them:
-serve 'em up some beer until they're drunk as skunks and drowning in their misery.
-sell them to the neighbor kids for 1 cent a snail - they'll pick them out of your garden as a fun project. you can "euthanize" them in the freezer in a bag. we like to call it "chilling them out" since they are so um high strung...yeah ..uh-hunh that's it...high-strung snails.

Re: Snails!
Thu, May 20, 2010 - 7:13 AMI don't like the idea of killing anything, so I have heard that if you plant a few thing that they really like some distance from your garden, you can make them happy and save your karma. -

Re: Snails!
Thu, May 20, 2010 - 8:12 AMDo you have any advice that relates to gardening rather than to my spiritual choices? Which, by the way, are my own and not your business to advise me about.
For instance do you have any actual advise on what kind of plants would hinder snails? That I am interested in hearing. Your advice on karma you can keep to yourself, thank you very much. -

Re: Snails!
Thu, May 20, 2010 - 8:33 AMSelf correction: "do you have any actual advise" should read "do you have any actual advice." -

Re: Snails!
Thu, May 20, 2010 - 10:14 AMsomeone told me garlic plants will help keep them out, but I planted a half dozen around a cabbage plant the snails were eating and they (or something) went ahead and ate the garlic instead. The beer thing works for 'trapping' a bunch of them. Other than that, please share your trial and error on this, so I can piggy back your efforts!!!!
and don't think of it as killing snails.........think of it as defending your garden to the death!!!! (hey, I'm just making light here. Just jokes, although I agree with your 'karma' response)

Re: Snails!
Thu, May 20, 2010 - 10:23 PMSorry, can't find a thing. Everybody just wants to kill them. They are living things to that have the same right to live as you do, but as I said before, it ain't my Karma. 8^) -

So then the answer is you don't have any actual gardening advice. Just unsolicited spiritual advice.

Re: Snails!
Fri, May 21, 2010 - 5:36 AMtry eggshells in the garden or use some sand. Here is a thread from a while back. Snails don't like traveling over rough areas

Fri, May 21, 2010 - 8:09 AMJivatma, I've read the thing about the ducks before. I think that is a great idea and If I had a place to accommodate a duck I would totally do it. I did try having a little frog pond right there where in the area where the snails gather the most because I heard frogs like to eat them (and because my three year old loves frogs) but raccoons came along and had a frog buffet. -

Re: Snails!
Mon, May 24, 2010 - 7:08 PMyeah I want to learn more about ducks for this use. I know it's a pretty common practice. The cool thing is they'll browse around eating them supposedly, so you don't even have to even bend over to pull them off. Seen someone feeding them by hand to pigs on youtube, but that requires a bit of work if you have a nice crop of potato or something else that attracts them -
-
Re: Snails!
Thu, May 27, 2010 - 7:35 PMYes, ducks do a great job. They will find them on their own and not hurt your garden. I had a friend with a duck once and used to ask her to bring it to my yard now and then.
The beer trick works, too. I used to use lids of jars placed here and there around the garden with beer in them. The snails and slugs like the beer, you'll find them there in the moring.
I don't have a garden right now. I miss it so much! -

Fri, May 28, 2010 - 10:02 AMSomeone suggested iron phosphate to me and the box says that it is organic but I am still concerned about how safe it is. I have pets and kids running around my yard.

Re: Snails!
Fri, March 2, 2012 - 11:46 AMthis is a fairly old post, and my reply may be late. I used to live where there were snails and used a product called Es-Car-Go. It was a copper based product (I think?) that used snail pheromones. they are attracted to eat it and die. anything they don't eat breaks down and it puts copper back into the soil, perfectly safe for everything else, and was certified organic.
