I know this is an organic-gardening tribe. :) I'm a long-time gardener, carpenter, handyman, tinkerer, etc - living on homestead land. Not too long back, at an estate sale, I bought an oxy-acetylene welding rig. I'm interested in finding ideas and plans for making things that are useful on a small farm, or for the home. Materials like wood, ferrous metals, brass, or rubber (e.g., tires) are all acceptable. What I'm really looking for good sources for concepts & plans.
I realize this may all seem a little vague, but bear with me... I'd really appreciate any advice about books that I could investigate and possibly buy, plus Web sites that may offer plans (either for sale or for free) and on-line forums where people discuss such projects and maybe show pictures. Thanks.

I recently read an article about a 3-part compost bin made of wood and chicken wire. You rotate from left to right, and by the time all 3 are full, the 3rd binful is "done". I've also clipped articles about garden carts (most use bike wheels), bird/bee/bat houses, potting benches, sheds,and lots of other fun things. My husband (a cabinetmaker by trade) and I comb the trendy garden gift catalogs that innundate the mail for cool stuff we could never afford but could very easily build. Have fun! Ideas are everywhere. -

Sun, December 7, 2008 - 1:27 PMThanks. Yeah, I use that three-bin composting system myself, here on my place. Also I've got one of those bicycle-wheel type garden carts.
It's a good idea to look at catalogues for designs.

Otherwise, it just becomes more junk cluttering up the place, unless it is totally useless, in which case it is "art", -

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 1:00 PMThere is a series of 12 books wrote by a group in the mountains of Georgia called foxfire that shows how things were crafted in the pioneering days of the Appalachian Mountains and gives you the step by step instructions includes everything from welding, forging moonshining to log splitting etc...the entire series cost over $200 but you can still purchase several of the books by themselves.
I am almost sure that this is a source that will inspire you!
