I hate to just throw them away, but i really dont know what to do with them. In addition to the few plants in the garden, there are also two large volunteer plants that took over the compost pile. a few years ago, I hung the plants in the basement before the first freeze and they did ripen and turn red. They were good enough to freeze and put in stews and chili. I was hoping someone could share their recipes for green tomatoes. I've heard of fried tomatoes of course, and pickles......i'm not a pickle fan, but i will try the fried maters for the first time this year. Any other ideas?

Re: HELP! fall is here and i have a multitude of green tomatoes
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 5:57 PMI would make salsa. Give it your signature touch, and who knows if folks at the farmers market wouldn't eat it up. Trends begin in odd ways...

Re: HELP! fall is here and i have a multitude of green tomatoes
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 6:44 PMI'm not sure what kind of pickles you mean but green tomatoes can be used to make a delicious chutney - it's a sweet relish more than a pickled taste and the sultanas/raisins add a nice sweet edge. It's also something you can make and then give as presents. Here are links to two recipes that look good (it's ages since I made it and the recipe is long gone but these are very similar - the second link has a whole bunch of recipes for green tomatoes).

Re: HELP! fall is here and i have a multitude of green tomatoes
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 2:43 PMThe chutney IS delicious! Sultanas are raisins, it's the Australian term for them, but in the US it can also mean raisins made from lighter coloured grapes (often called "golden sultanas").

i don't think that golden sultana raisins will grow in Washington state.
In fact, do you have any raisin bushes there at all?

Re: HELP! fall is here and i have a multitude of green tomatoes
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 8:50 AMI dislike green tomatoes, so this is my solution. I might be too late to the conversation, but I bring my tomatoes in and ripen them. My neighbor pulls out the whole plant and hangs them by the roots in the garage. I don't have space for that so I pick them, put them in cardboard boxes and keep them in the garage. They should not be piled -- just one layer on the bottom of the box. This year I sorted them by how much ripening they needed -- the greenest ones in one box, pink in another, etc. You need to keep an eye on them and grab the ones that get ripe and the ones that decide to mold instead. The ones that ripened first made good eating, and yesterday I made sauce with the last of the ones I brought in (we had a freeze early in October). -

Re: HELP! fall is here and i have a multitude of green tomatoes
Sun, November 22, 2009 - 9:12 AMThis is probably too late for this season, but make a copy for next year. This is my mom's recipe. I use jelly jars. I love this with beans!
Green Tomato Relish
2 qts green tomatoes
3 red sweet peppers
3 green sweet peppers
3 cups sugar
3 cups vinegar
2 tsp salt
5 medium onions
Grind or chop tomatoes, onions and peppers. Let drain in cheese cloth or colander until all juice runs off. Mix all together and bring to a boil. Pack into jars and seal. (You could half this.)
