Yeah, that's the thing about California. Everybody thinks of it as Sunny here, which it is for the most part. However, that doesn't mean it's warm. This week it went from the low 70s on Monday to 95 yesterday. Tuesday it is supposed to be back in the low 70s.

Well, the blooms that have formed since the heat wave broke are still on the plants and one has set fruit. I don't usually buy transplants, preferring to start everything from seed. But I had my heart set on Amish Paste tomatoes so I went ahead and ordered transplants. In the future I'll go back to starting my own. I think it makes a big difference to start the seeds in the same environment in which they'll live. I start everything on the front porch, bringing them in at night if necessary. But the plants seem stronger. Live and learn.

My heart goes out to you Sara. I had terrible luck growing things when I lived in California. The weather was just too unpredictable. Now I'm in the southern Midwest where I pretty much know what to expect from day to day.

According to my book, "Golden Gate Gardening" Tomatoes will drop flowers if they get below 55 F at night. Here that is a big problem because any day of the year it can get below 55 F. Tomatoes are a challenge to grow here and eggplant is even worse. My tomatoes that are growing right next to the asphalt driveway are doing well, however, the ones that I planted behind the carport, not so good. Next year I will only plant tomatoes next to the driveway because it is warmer there at night.
