Thanks, Ms Purity! I put mine in a dark, cool closet and even put a little piece of tape on each one with the date I picked it so I'd know which squash to start with. I should harvest them as soon as they pass the fingernail test, eh? That is, I assume that lettin' 'em get bigger negatively impacts their quality.

The general rule is that you pick it when you can no longer puncture the skin with your fingernail, however, this isn't true for pumpkins. And yes, you want to cure them out of direct sunlight for a month or so.

I'm growing winter squash for the first time, and I think I'm going to have a bumper crop! I'm not sure how to tell when to harvest my delicata, however. Anyone have any tips? Also, I've heard that your should "cure" winter squash. That is, wait as much as a month after harvest before eating it. Fact or fiction?
